For most of your working life, the answer to “what do you do?” came automatically. You were a teacher, a surgeon, a business owner, and that one word helped define something about you. Retirement takes that shorthand away, and the word “retired” doesn’t always feel like a fair replacement. It can sound like a finish line for someone who isn’t finished.
What we’ve noticed is that the people most at ease in this stage tend to describe themselves by what they’re doing now, not what they used to do. A gardener. A volunteer. An amateur writer. The label doesn’t really matter, but getting to choose it for yourself is what makes the difference.
