Halloween is one of the few nights of the year when neighbors come to your door without being invited. Plenty of us remember how exciting it was to go door to door as kids. As it turns out, giving candy away can be just as fun. The doorbell rings every few minutes, usually to reveal a small superhero fumbling over what he’s supposed to say and a parent waiting at the end of the driveway to remind him.
Handing out candy also gives you a sense of how the neighborhood is changing. A family that moved in over the summer might introduce themselves while their toddler takes a long time choosing a candy bar. And it can be a little startling to open the door to a teenager you remember in a homemade dinosaur costume, now walking a younger sibling from house to house.
If you’re planning to be home that night, it’s worth keeping a few extra pieces on hand for the older kids who come by late..
We would enjoy hearing about your favorite Halloween memory the next time we talk.
